Isi-Uzor Umuodafe Receives Pharm Joseph Okonma in a Grand Nkpobata Ceremony

- Emeka Esogbue

A few days after Onowu Joseph Adinlofu received the Umuodafe subjects of Ibusa as the Diokpa of the Quarter, the Isi-Uzor descendants, a part of the larger Umuodafe Quarters have also welcomed Pharm Joseph Okonma as the Diokpa of Isi-Uzo, Umuodafe, in a ceremony heavily and gracefully attended by the sons and daughters of the community.

Onowu Joseph Adinlofu on Saturday, October 15, 2022, joyously received his subjects of Umuodafe in a grand traditional ceremony called "inabata Umu" in the age-long tradition of his Ibusa people. The event, well-attended by dignitaries from Umuodafe and beyond was hailed as successful.

However, three days after, precisely, on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, Diokpa Joseph Okonma also joyously received the Isi-Uzor part of the Quarters in another ceremony typically called "Nkpobata."

The event, attended by indigenes had Diokpa Okonma, the celebrant address the audience in moments of joy as the people feasted, laughed, and saluted one another almost without an end. It was also an occasion that the "Ede" traditional greeting of the Umuodafe family filled the air with familiarity as it was heard, frequently exchanged by attendees in a festive mood.

PEN MASTER reliably gathered that the occasion was saved from ruination as some individuals, numbering three almost disrupted it until calmness was forced to return.

Chief Amaechi Nwaenie, the Uwolo of Ibusa who hails from the Isi-Uzor part of Umuodafe and later spoke to PEN MASTER said, "the event was well attended despite a disgraceful attempt by three disgruntled individuals to ruin the event."

The individuals were unnamed by him though. Nevertheless, there was no recorded egregious incident beyond the reported episode.

"It was a triumph of good over evil at the end of the day. Congratulations to Onowu (Pharm) Joseph Okonma and the good people of the Umuodafe community (Isi-Uzor)," the Uwolo told PEN MASTER with joy, after the event.

Umuodafe, one of the ten quarters that make up the Ibusa community in Delta State is strategically located and also blessed with abundant human resources, many of who are achievers in different endeavours and are found around the world successfully contributing to global developments.

A SHORT HISTORY OF OBOLLO CLAN IN ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

A SHORT HISTORY OF OBOLLO CLAN IN ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA By Emeka Esogbue Introduction Not many historical literatures on the Obollo people exist for the usual reasons associated with our people who prefer to write the history of mighty and populous peoples already enriched with volumes of historical accounts and records. Thus while there are historical documents on other peoples of Igbo, for Obollo, it is the story of dearth of documents. However, it is within my historical concern that the rich history of this part of Igboland be adequately researched into, documented and preserved for the future generation. I do not hail from this part of Igboland but my historical background, interest and curiosity propelled me towards the acquisition of both oral and written information to put this material together. Geography The various Obollo communities comprising of Obollo Afor, Obollo Etiti, Obollo Eke, Obollo Orie and Obollo Nkwo are strategically situated at the regional bou...

Umuezechime in Anioma: History and Identity Factor Resolved By Emeka Esogbue

Umuezechime in Anioma: History and Identity Factor Resolved By Emeka Esogbue Introduction Although the Anioma peopling the West Bank of the Niger River Basin have often been categorized as a people that wholesomely trace their origin to only one particular ethnic group of Nigeria by writers of history and other researchers from outside the Anioma region, numerous historical evidences drawn from the oral and written sources, and migration theories of the people confirm their heterogeneous origins. Evidently, all the peoples that now comprise the “Anioma” area originated from different ethnic groups of the Nigerian nation.   The above is confirmed by Osia (2012:6) who wrote: “History notes that the Anioma people trace their origins to various communities within Nigeria: Edo, Igala, Yoruba and Igbo. No history has proved these ancestries otherwise…” Esogbue (2015:14) further admitted that: “there is always tendency for researchers to an extent to assign the whole of...
