Mixed Reactions Welcome Trendy Onicha-Ugbo City Gate on Social Media
- Emeka Esogbue
Mixed feelings greeted the Onicha-Ugbo City Gate which hit Anioma groups on social media.
Images of the amazing and strategically positioned Onicha-Ugbo City Gate with the inscription "Welcome to Onicha-Ugbo City Gate Diokpala Ezechime" hit the Anioma groups on social media with many hailing the idea and concept behind the people's Gate. However, a few commentators critically pointed at the location of the City Gate, describing it as a "no road."
Wondering why a beautiful City Gate should rest on a bad road, Akay Umeadi asked, "What is this that really needs requires (sic) media or Facebook post?"
Going further, he wrote, "this is an eyesore and if work is still ongoing why paint the wall that should have been the last thing to be done?"
However, in his reaction, Issele-Uku-born Author of the book, "The Kingmaker: A Biography of Justice Eustace Azomani Okafor Azomani and Lawyer, Leonard Azomani who appeared to admire the City Gate disagreed with him, emphasizing that the builders of the Gate have done their bit while the road is a responsibility of the Government.
"For their beautiful City Gate that tells so much. I just love it. The road is more of Government business am not after that," the prominent Pastor declared on the Anioma Watch Association WhatsApp forum.
"But there are some very rich people who are from that community. Can't they make the road a bit motorable? Ephraim Adinlofu further queried.
"One after the other, good job, God bless Onicha-Ugbo and her people. Greater Heights in Jesus Jesus' name. Congratulations," John Nwike also wrote on the Anioma Watch Association.
For the USA-based Anioma Philanthropist, Dr Anthony Ezeagbor, it was rather a historical curiosity over the "Diokpala Ezechime" inscription borne by the City Gate especially as a similar claim is espoused in Issele-Uku, another Ezechime community.
He sought historians to interpret the 'hot contest' between Onicha-Ugbo and Issele-Uku, the two Ezechime settlements.
Udeh Okechukwu Festus also noted it on Facebook when he questioned, "Good looking gate. Issele-Uku has "Head of Ezechime on it while Onicha-Ugbo has "Diokpala Ezechime" on it. What is the difference?
Investigations from PEN MASTER confirmed that the project, a private initiative was funded by ODCF and supervised by OPU. Sources from the community who would not like to be disclosed further said that it was not within the powers of the ODCF to shoulder the burden of the major road leading to the community.
Onicha-Ugbo is located in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State. The Onicha-Ugbo community is rich with human resources some of whom have enjoyed political offices in the country.
