Omu Anioma United Us, the Enuani People

- Emeka Esogbue

The late Omu of Anioma, HRM Obi Martha Dunkwu will remain in history as one who invited us cultural unity and one contributed to the lifting of the Okpanam community.

As it relates to bringing our people together, strengthening and promoting us in cultural terms, I can think of HRM Obi Martha Dunkwu, Arc Kester Ifeadi, Idumuje-Unor-born Chief Michael Odiakosa, Gideon Nwaomu and a few others. While several of our chieftaincy title holders and other custodians of our tradition thought of their immediate communities, the trio had no bound.

They pursued the formation of a united Enuani cultural front and I think they deserve some pat on the back from the rest of us.

The late Omu of Anioma had no access to government source of funds. She was not a contractor and had no sponsors. Her customary position never allowed her to work or do business. Despite all odds, she used all she had to give everything necessary to the Anioma people. This is how to show love to one's people.

One day, she called me and spoke of the need for Aniocha-Oshimili coalescence. She condemned the duality of Aniocha and Oshimili and advised on the singularism of both peoples.

"Ikas are Ikas and Ndokwas are Ndokwas. We should not be divisively "Aniocha and Oshimili but collectively Enuani," she advised.

This made sense to me. Ultimately, we are a trio of Enuani, Ika and Ndokwa.

Announcing the setting up of the Omu Centre in Okpanam, she invited some of us from Ibusa, Akwukwu-Igbo, Ubulu-Unor, Issele-Uku and Obior to further the cause and kept urging us to do something for the Omuship. Every attention was on Okpanam community but I found some means to also put my Ibusa in cultural light.

Today, I can hold my head high to say that I found delight in putting my Ibusa name in global cultural perspective with my documentations.

Unfortunately, the Omu has travelled well to the other world.

May her soul rest in peace.
