JONNIEWOOD OLIMMAH (1947-2011): THE ANIOMA MAN THAT HAD A HAND IN THE CAREER OF NIGERIAN MUSICIANS

By Emeka Esogbue It would seem that the life and times of Jonniewood Olimmah was entirely with music, yet he was unsung even in death. Born to Onowu Richard Ebonye Olimmah and Christiana Kanyisiyochukwundu Olimmah in Ibusa, an Anioma community of Delta State. Jonniewood Olimmah in his lifetime was the best known Ibusa instrumentalist; one of the most popular instrumentalists of Nigerian extraction also adjudged one of the best three African organists of his time. He was also one of the best travelled African instrumentalists around the world. Like many of his contemporaries, Olimmah was denied of early years of schooling by the demise of his father. Having started his primary schooling at the then famous Sacred Heart Elementary School, Ibusa, his custody then passed to three of his uncles who nurtured him, Onowu Bernard Olimmah, Onowu Thamos Ilomechina and finally, Lawrence Ashikodi (the Ibusa Historian). ICDU initiates Ibusa development By Emeka Esogbue News Published August 17, 2016 In what has been described as a new dawn for Ibusa, a community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, indigenes of the community on Sunday, August 14, 2016, gathered at the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos under the auspices of the Ibusa community Development Union (ICDU) to plan in details areas by which the community can be resituated to meet the demands in modern Nigeria. Speaking at the occasion in which over one hundred sons and daughters of the community were present, the President-General of Ibusa Community Development Union (ICDU), Dr. Austin Izagbo who reiterated the loyalty, commitment and drive of the development union towards the advancement of his community said among other things that the development union would not in any way take the honour and privilege already allowed her for granted. The President-General who went down the memory lane, recalled that
