AN ANIOMA MAN WROTE THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE NIGERIAN NAVY; AN ANIOMA MAN GAVE THE ORDER FOR UNION JACK TO BE LOWERED AND THE NIGERIAN FLAG HOISTED, AND AN ANIOMA MAN CARRIED OUT THE ORDER
The Anioma group is one of the most blessed groups in Nigeria in terms of human resources. It is doubtful how many groups can match this group in in human materials. In nearly every endeavour, the region continues to impact on the Nigerian society with men and women of excellent feats. Many ANIOMA ESSENCE readers of Vol 2. No. 3. 2015 edition were pleasantly surprised to know that one of the only two persons, being the only Nigerian that drafted the rules and regulations upon which today's Nigerian Navy was f
ounded was Navy Commander Zonyeuno Chiazor.
This man is an Anioma indigene from Atuma, in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta.
The man popularly called called OZ Chiazor was also the first Black man to have enlisted in the Canadian Navy as an officer, thus he also became the first Black man to have served in the Canadian Navy. By implication, an Anioma man was the first Black man to serve in the Canadian Navy. Diokpa Chiazor told the Anioma Essence team the story of how he later abandoned Canada for Nigeria.
He recounted, 'I was already an officer and during my last summer, Dennis Osadebay, the Premier of the Midwestern region came visiting. I was asked to take charge as they were my people. I was in uniform and passed by Osadebay and he asked who I was. I replied I am a Nigerian. He asked what I was doing there, I laughed and told him that I was an officer on board my ship. He was surprised and asked from what part of Nigeria. I told him I was from Asaba...he turned to his entourage and said that's my son...'
At that time, James Robertson was the Governor-General of Nigeria and they wanted to set up Nigeria Navy.
Incidentally, at independence, Diokpa Chiazor was the officer that commanded the October 1, 1960 independence parade that ushered Nigeria as an independent state. He gave the order for the Union Jack to be lowered and the Nigerian flag hoisted and that order was carried out by another Anioma son, Col Mike Nduka Okwechime, from Ibusa, another community in Oshimili North Local Government. Now, by historical implication, two Anioma sons, both from Oshimili North Local Government Area, ordered the lowering and hoisting of the flags on behalf of colonial Britain and young Nigeria. How auspicious history of human achievements often favours the Anioma people. Happily, both men are well and kicking. Indeed, Anioma is the good land.
